Sids Safety Tip

Make sure you check your baby's head cannot pass through the neck hole of the grobag once it's fastened for use. Choosing the right size grobag ensures your baby cannot slip down into the sleeping bag and suffocate.

Never use your Grobag baby sleeping bag with a duvet or quilt. There's no need for blankets or top sheets, just the appropriate nightclothes.

Choosing a size

The best time to start using a grobag baby sleeping bag is when your baby weighs more than 7 lbs (0-6 mths size). To choose the right size grobag, use the following table below. Please remember that these are recommendations only as all babies are different.

Approximate child age Minimum child weight Maximum child length
0-6 months 3.2kg / 7lb 68cm / 27"
6-18 months 8.1kg / 18lb 86cm /34"
18-36 months 11.4kg / 25lb 98cm / 39"
3-6 years 53.3cm chest 116cm / 46"
Choosing a TOG (Warmth rating)

The higher the TOG, the warmer the product. Grobag baby sleeping bags are available in three tog ratings:

Your nursery temperature Recommended TOG rating
16-20°C (61-69°F) 2.5 TOG
20-24°C (69-73°F) 1.0 TOG
24-27°C (73-80°F) 0.5 TOG

The ideal nursery temperature for babies is 16-20°C (61-69°F). Please note: A number of external factors determine the TOG rating of the sleeping bag that should be used. These include the quantity of clothing the baby is wearing, the temperature of the infant's bedroom, the baby's health and the amount of bedding necessary to keep an individual infant warm - this may vary as it does for adults.

Your Grobag baby sleeping bag comes with a free nursery thermometer to help you select which tog baby sleeping bag to use and what sleepwear to put your baby in.

Sids Safety Tip

Remember to check your baby regularly to ensure he/she does not overheat.

What babies should wear

Depending upon the TOG of your sleeping bag and the nursery temperature, your baby should be wearing different amounts of clothing. Here's a guide:

Nursery temperature 2.5 TOG 1.0 TOG 0.5 TOG
26°C (79°F) Short sleeved bodysuit
24°C (75°F) Short sleeved bodysuit
22°C (71°F) Long sleeved bodysuit
20°C (65°F) Long sleeved bodysuit Short sleeved bodysuit & pyjama top
18°C (65°F) Long sleeved bodysuit & pyjama top
16°C (61°F) Long sleeved bodysuit & sleepsuit/pyjama set
Washing instructions

Grobags can be washed at 40ºC and tumble dried on a low heat setting. Grobags are designed to allow for up to 5% shrinkage, which happens with all cotton goods. If your child has any allergies and you wish to wash clothes and bedding at 60ºC, you should allow for a little more shrinkage.

To ensure the long life of your baby sleeping bag the zip must be in the closed position throughout washing, tumble drying and ironing. Place a cloth over the zip when ironing. Experience has told us that it is usually best to buy 2 Grobags - one to wear and one for the wash!

Why Grobags have a reputation for safety

Grobags are a safe alternative to traditional blankets and top sheets.

There is hardly a baby in the world that does not kick off top bedding, become chilly in the middle of the night and wake up the house! Grobag® baby sleeping bags keep them warm and cosy, whatever position they end up in by the morning, which means a safer sleeping environment for your baby and more sleep for you.

It is well known that babies should be put to sleep on their backs, but not so well known are the potential dangers of loose bedding going over babies heads and over heating by using too much bedding. Their is a definite increase in SIDS during winter months and this is thought to be due to loose bedding and over heating.

Grobags are designed to follow guidelines set by the Foundation for the Study of Infant Death (FSID), that baby sleeping bags should be sleeve-less, no hood, well-fitting and a low tog rating, no more than 2.5 togs.

Grobags are thermal rated (TOG rated) with a guide to dressing your child. They are designed to keep babies at a safe comfortable temperature and have the correct size neck openings so babies will not slip down into the baby sleeping bag.

Fire safety information

Gro-group™ have a core commitment to ensure that their products are as safe as possible. In order to achieve this, they undertake risk assessments before making decisions about what components to use in their manufacture.

They do not use chemicals to fire retard Grobags. This is because prolonged exposure to a high dosage of chemical flame retardant carries considerable risks - for example they may impair the immune system (source. Intertek Testing Services). However, as a responsible manufacturer, they have undertaken to research non-chemical and safe ways in which to reduce the flammability of baby sleeping bags.

Outer fabric and lining: Where possible, they use 100% cotton lining on our Grobags in order that a natural and breathable product like cotton will always be next to a baby's skin. The majority of Grobags also have 100% cotton outer fabric. The only possible way in which to fire retard cotton is to add chemicals and they believe that the risk to an infant of direct contact with these chemicals (by skin contact, sucking or inhaling) outweighs the potential risks associated with fire.

Filling: The filling of the 2.5 tog Grobags is made from 100% polyester. It is possible to construct this filling in such a way as to meet the fire retardancy requirements without adding any chemicals. In order to achieve this they use a special mix of three different types of polyester fibres which between them produce a 100% chemical free polyester wadding that complies with BS5852 Ignition Source 0, and will effectively "retard" any flame that comes into contact with the wadding. The choice of this wadding is preferable to the other two options which are as follows:

  1. Standard polyester wadding with no FR properties, when burnt, emits a nasty smell, dark smoke and leaves behind a very hot black residue that, could stick to and burn the skin.
  2. Chemically fire retarded polyester wadding, the exposure to which is potentially harmful to an infant.

Gro-group™ therefore believe that the third option of a chemical free and inherently fire retardant polyester wadding is completely in line with their core safety and quality values.

Although the cotton outer and lining are not fire retarded, the use of the inherently fire retardant polyester filling on their range of 2.5 tog grobag® baby sleeping bags effectively helps to retard fire on a made up product rather than contributing to it, which would be the case if they used a standard (and cheaper) non-FR alternative.
